Akoya pearls, often referred to as Japanese pearls, are best known in the market through the renowned Mikimoto brand. These saltwater cultured pearls are produced by the Akoya oyster (Pinctada fucata), making them the first type of pearl successfully cultivated on a commercial scale.
The cultivation of Akoya pearls began in the early 20th century, pioneered by Kokichi Mikimoto, who is widely recognized as the father of the Japanese pearl industry. Akoya pearls are available in a range of natural colors, including white, cream, silver, and pink. Among these, light pink Akoya pearls are particularly prized and command some of the highest prices in the market.
At first glance, Akoya pearls may resemble freshwater pearls. However, a closer comparison reveals distinct differences. Akoya pearls are generally rounder in shape and possess a sharper, more brilliant luster. In fact, they are renowned for having some of the highest luster and mirror-like shine among all pearl varieties.
While Akoya pearls are primarily cultivated in Japan, they are also farmed in other countries, including China, Vietnam, South Korea, and Australia.
